Herring is a type of fish packed with nutrition and has a unique flavour that is often used in salads. This salad is easy to prepare and can be served as a light meal or as a side dish.

    Ingredients

    • 2 cups of chopped herring
    • 1/2 cup of diced onion
    • 1/2 cup of diced celery
    • 1/2 cup of diced apple
    • 1/2 cup of mayonnaise
    • 1/4 cup of sour cream
    • 1 tablespoon of dill
    • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Method

    • Step-by-Step Method for Herring Salad
    • Chill a large mixing bowl in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
    • Rinse and pat dry the chopped herring if needed, then set aside.
    • Peel and dice the onion into small, even pieces and set aside.
    • Dice the celery into small, even pieces and set aside.
    • Dice the apple, leaving the skin on for color and texture, then set aside.
    • In a separate small bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, dill, and lemon juice and mix well.
    • Season the dressing mixture with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Add the herring, onion, celery, and apple to the chilled mixing bowl.
    • Pour the dressing over the ingredients in the large bowl.
    • Gently fold all the ingredients together with a spatula until evenly coated.
    • Check seasoning, add extra salt, pepper, or lemon juice if desired.
    • Cover the salad and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes for flavors to develop.
    • Before serving, give the salad a gentle stir to refresh texture.
    • Spoon the salad onto chilled plates or into small bowls for serving.
    • Garnish each serving with a sprinkle of additional fresh dill if desired.
    • Optional: Serve with rye bread or crispbread on the side for contrast.
