FAQs

Is the frozen crab good for me?
Precooked crab has the same excellent taste as the fresh crab. The crabs are usually cooked while still on the fishing vessel and instantly flash-frozen to retain the rich taste of its meat. It is safer and more convenient to buy frozen crab.
How are you going to thaw frozen crab?
Consider placing it in a fridge overnight to defrost, if you have decided to consume and cook again your pre-cooked frozen crab. To defrost crab rapidly, seal it all in cling film and submerge it in cold water. Never use hot water. A crab that weighs two pounds will defrost easily in an hour.
How do you prepare and cook a frozen crab?
Thaw and cook frozen, uncooked crab by putting it in boiling broth. Boil up to 30 minutes for big crabs; 20 minutes for smaller crabs. But if the crabs are pre-cooked, you could perhaps boil them for 8 or 9 minutes. Boil a big pot of water before putting in the crab for the best results. Then cover the pot, wait for it to boil again, and let it simmer for 8 to 9 minutes.
Can you eat that little yellow stuff in crabs?
A crab’s hepatopancreas is often referred to as tomalley, or “fat”; it is yellow or yellowish-green in colour.
It is a delicacy, especially when consuming boiled or steamed crabs. Typically these bits can be consumed in limited amounts.
How can you quickly defrost frozen crab meat?
The crab should be immersed in water but it should be inside a leak-proof plastic bag. Immerse the fish in cold tap water then change the water every 30 mins until the fish has completely defrosted. At no point should you defrost the crab by putting it in hot water as this will promote bacterial growth.
