In a bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, egg, milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until the mixture is smooth.
Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or large pot to 375°F.
Dip each calamari ring in the batter, and then carefully place it in the hot oil. Fry the calamari rings for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Remove the calamari rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb any excess oil.
