A 1kg pack of whole black tiger prawns from south-east Asia — 8 to 12 large prawns at the premium 8/12 grade. Black tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon) are known for their long, smooth bodies with distinctive black-and-yellow stripes — visually striking and one of our favourite prawn products. Sweet, succulent flesh that takes confidently to BBQ, grill or sear.

How to cook black tiger prawns

  • BBQ / griddle: 2–3 minutes per side over high heat, shell-on for best flavour.
  • Pan-fry: butter, garlic and chilli over medium-high for 3–4 minutes total.
  • Oven: 220°C for 7–9 minutes.
  • Paella centrepiece: arrange across the rice in the last 5 minutes.
  • Butterflied with garlic butter: split lengthwise, brush, grill flesh-up for 4–5 minutes.

Save the heads — they make an excellent prawn stock or bisque base. Pair with a chilled Albariño or a Spanish rosé.
