How to serve
- Over pie and mash (the classic): warm gently and pour over the pie and mashed potato.
- As a sauce for fish: serves equally well over white fish, salmon or smoked haddock.

Pie and mash with proper liquor and malt vinegar is one of the great British comfort foods — born in the East End docks and still served at the dwindling number of pie shops in London (down to about 34 in 2024).
